Farm of the Future

Designed as a unified digital platform built on Azure that brings fragmented agricultural data into a single, cohesive user experience. The product prioritizes data integration and clarity, allowing farmers to easily monitor sustainability efforts without juggling multiple tools.

My Role and Collaborators:

I led the design of an Azure-based agricultural platform that unified fragmented soil, irrigation, carbon, procurement, and ESG data into a scalable experience for farmers and sustainability teams.

Understanding Our Users

This platform was designed for three main user groups:

Farmers and farm managers focused on regenerative practice
ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) officers, tracking sustainability
Procurement analysts, needing traceability
Understanding the Problem
Agriculture faces two major challenges: severe soil degradation and rising food demand. Farmers need to adopt regenerative practices but lack the digital tools to track progress, validate sustainability, and make data-driven decisions. The goal is to provide a unified platform that helps them manage everything from carbon tracking to irrigation efficiency.
Key Questions
How can we help users integrate diverse data sources?
Can they make better sustainability decisions?
How can we design a clear and scalable interface for real-world deployment?
Research Approach
Led discovery through expert interviews to validate UX decisions, enhancing ESG data visualization, terminology, and cross-device navigation. Combined user insights with sustainability and compliance research.
Research Synthethis
Users had fragmented data across many systems, and they struggled to connect sustainability metrics to practical action. Users needed a more intuitive, user-centered experience.

Strategic Insight:

“Farmers are overwhelmed by siloed tools for carbon, irrigation, and soil metrics. To drive adoption, the platform had to seamlessly translate complex regulations into intuitive, day-to-day farming workflows.”

Experience Model

Identified role-relevant views and workflows that maintain a consistent experience model. That allowed the product to adapt to different users without becoming a set of disconnected tools.

Design Strategy

From research insights to product strategy:

Transformed fragmented data into a unified performance overview dashboard with shared filters and comparisons.
Designed role-specific workflows while maintaining a shared interaction model.
Connected sustainability metrics to practical action by aligning performance indicators to documented practices and recommendations.
Improved trust by connecting traceability and context to source data, time periods, fields, and making comparison criteria visible.

Designed for Consistent UX Across Dashboards

A unified experience across dashboards, tables, maps, and filters ensures clarity and ease of use. Standardized patterns and data visualization approaches improve usability while strengthening collaboration between design, engineering, and stakeholders.

Designed with SaaS in Mind

A modular design system of reusable components, interaction patterns, and grids enables consistency and scalability. Aligned with Microsoft ecosystems, it supports seamless integration, extensibility, and efficient cross-team collaboration.

Designed for Scalability and Usability

Designed to support complex agricultural data and diverse user needs, the experience balances usability with technical constraints. It adapts to different user roles and workflows, enabling efficient, practical decision-making across the platform.
Our Results
We worked with Satish Thomas CTO of Food and Ag R&D at Microsoft to research and develop the Farm of the Future solution that marks a pivotal milestone in the journey towards regenerative agriculture providing farmers with a holistic solution that centralizes data management and empowers the transition to a sustainable, net-zero future.

We worked together with Andrew Nelson’s farm to research and create the Farm of the Future solution to empower farmers to track key Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) metrics and manage their sustainability initiatives more effectively.
